A QUICK GUIDE

How to read
the model’s call.

THE BOX

Four horses to consider.

The box is the model’s four-horse shortlist, shown in its order of preference. Read all four. It is not a prediction that these horses will finish first, second, third and fourth.

THE LEAN

The first-ranked horse.

The lean is the model’s preferred horse within that box. It is a preference, not a certainty. The lean can miss while another horse in the box wins.

ILLUSTRATION ONLY

Made-up numbers to explain the card. These are not Cup selections.

  1. 8Box rank 1The lean
  2. 3Box rank 2In the box
  3. 12Box rank 3In the box
  4. 6Box rank 4In the box

If No. 12 wins, the winner was in the box, but the lean missed.

The large number identifies the horse.
It is the saddlecloth number. “Box rank” is the model’s preference, shown separately underneath.
The percentage is an estimated win chance.
It is the model’s estimate for that horse, not betting odds or a promise. The four percentages need not add to 100%: the rest of the field can win too.
Confidence and coverage mean different things.
Strong, Fair and Weak describe how clearly the model separates the field. Thin data means there is less evidence about a horse; it does not mean the horse is weak.
